About this product:
Our Wildflower Meadow Rug Hessian is a pre-printed, pre-hemmed 110 x 80cm rug backing designed to make starting your next rag rug simple and enjoyable. Featuring a delicate floral pattern inspired by vintage embroidery, it’s full of relaxed, meadow-style flowers that work beautifully with the short shaggy and rug hooked rag rug techniques (a lot of the design gets lost when doing the longer proggy / shaggy style so it's not one we recommend for this project).
This design is the second in our floral embroidery-inspired series, following on from our much-loved Flower Power Rug (140 x 100cm). It has the same gentle, hand-drawn feel, with flowing shapes that are easy to follow and satisfying to fill.
Each piece comes fully hemmed and ready to rag rug, so there’s no sewing needed before you begin. Just choose your fabrics, pick up your tools, and start making.
As with all our Ragged Life hessian, this is a medium weave (10HPI), which makes it ideal for use with a rug hook, spring tool or locker hook. And because it comes pre-hemmed, there’s no fiddly machine sewing to get in the way of your creativity.
With Fabric or Without Fabric?
Our light blue, pink, purple, green and orange sampler was rug hooked in the loopy style using a Ragged Life rug hook and an assortment of Ragged Life Wool Blanket Yarns. It took approx 6.5 x 250g balls to fully fill the rug.
Our other sample rug with a navy background was worked in the short shaggy technique using a rag rug spring tool and cutting gauge and a mixture of recycled fabrics. It's hard to calculate exactly how much fabric it took as a lot of it was scraps but after weighing the finished rug, we estimate it took 1.75kg to complete in the short shaggy technique.

Pre-Printed Hessian + Blanket Yarn Bundle (£59.99): includes the Wildflower Meadow hessian plus 7 balls of our Ragged Life 100% Wool Blanket Yarn – enough to complete the entire 110 x 80cm rug in the rug hooking technique. This option takes all the stress out of sourcing materials, so you can get started straight away. Buying the blanket yarn as part of this bundle works out to almost half the price of buying the yarn separately - each ball costs only £6, as opposed to our usual £10 / ball. Fully Wool Wildflower Rug Bundle:
To personally select which colour balls of blanket selvedges you receive. Simply add the "Fully Wool Wildflower Rug Bundle" to your basket then browse the "blanket yarns" section of the Ragged Life shop to select seven full sized 250g balls of woollen blanket selvedges to also add to the basket. At checkout, the cost of these seven balls will be subtracted off the total, saving you money on your project. If you'd like for us to choose yarns for you then do not add any blanket yarns to the basket and we will select ones to post out to you.
